David Crawford Jones (SUNY Albany, History MA 2007, PhD 2014) conducted ten months of research in Namibia in 2009 on a Fulbright grant. Working in the National Archives of Namibia in Windhoek while conducting oral interviews throughout the country, David collected histories of crime and punishment in twentieth century Namibia, when the country was colonized by apartheid South Africa. His research underscored internal divisions of class, gender and generation that framed Namibia’s liberation struggle, while also documenting the agency of indigenous elites who used their power to punish in order to demonstrate their independence from the colonial state.

The subsequent dissertation based on this research, Facing the Epokolo: Corporal Punishment and Scandal in Twentieth Century Ovamboland, received the university’s Distinguished Dissertation Award for 2014. In 2015, Dr. Jones’s research was published in The Journal of African History, and he is currently working on a book manuscript while teaching in the Department of African American Studies at The Ohio State University.
