As Australia’s eleventh largest city, its nearly 300, 000 residents get the best of urban living and coastal relaxation just 80km from Sydney. Perfectly situated on the south coast of New South Wales at the foot of the Illawarra Escarpment, the city enjoys a pleasant climate, averaging 25°C in summer and 17°C in winter.
An adventurer and nature lover’s dream, the Illawarra region has some of the most pristine beaches in Australia and a network of mountain walking trails that lead to waterfalls, wildlife, and dazzling lookout points. Keeping healthy has rarely looked so good – with running tracks by the sea, bike trails through the mountains, and clean Pacific waters to swim in.
The city center has a vibrant, youthful culture with a growing live music and arts scene, bustling nightlife, and a wide range of cafes and restaurants to cater to every palate. Getting around is simple with a reliable transport network of trains, buses, and taxis, as well as dedicated bike paths. Multiple free shuttle buses also offer routes to and from each university campus and across the city.

The University of Wollongong (UOW) offers a wide range of subject offerings, including the following:

You can find courses offered at the UOW Handbook. Follow the steps listed below to find courses that may be considered applicable to your degree:
- Select ‘Areas of Study‘ tab, then adjust the filters accordingly under Award Type and Study Area. The options that appear are NOT classes, but they are Majors and Minors in your selected field of study.
- Select the most applicable Majors/Minors listed, and then scroll to ‘Structure‘ and select ‘Expand All‘. Here, you will see all of the individual courses within this Major/Minor.
- Click the course of interest to see the course description/syllabus of the class.
- To see if the course will be offered for the semester you go abroad, go to the upper section of this page where it says “Select campus, delivery mode, and session (for subjects)”, and select Wollongong-SPRING OR AUTUMN-On-Campus. REMEMBER – Australia is in the opposite season as the USA, so the semesters will be switch – UOW Spring semester is US Fall semester & UOW Autumn semester is US Spring semester.
- After the page reloads, check the Delivery section of the page. If it says “On Offer: Yes“, the course will be offered for the selected term.
- Upon acceptance into UOW’s Study Abroad and Exchange Program, you are required to submit an online study plan, proposing the classes you would like to take at UOW. CREDIT LOADS
Different credit points at UOW are worth different amounts of SUNY credits. There is also a grade conversion system. You must register for the equivalent of at least 12 SUNY credits, with up to a maximum of 19 SUNY credits:
UOW credit points = SUNY credits
3 UOW credit points = 2 SUNY
4 UOW credit points = 3 SUNY
5 UOW credit points = 3 SUNY
6 UOW credit points = 4 SUNY
7 UOW credit points = 5 SUNY
8 UOW credit points = 6 SUNY
Course equivalency information for UAlbany Students
Credits earned on this program may be approved to satisfy the World History/International Perspectives or other UAlbany General Education requirements, if you earn appropriate credit in these areas and receive approval using the General Education Substitution Request form found here: General Education Waivers, Substitutions & Appeals | University at Albany.
Courses may also satisfy major and minor requirements, with approval by the associated academic department(s). You may file a request to have additional courses approved for equivalency as necessary.
All courses successfully completed through this program abroad that are not assigned a specific UAlbany course equivalency will at least count as UAlbany General Elective credits. Credits and grades will appear on your UAlbany transcript.
Housing
The University of Wollongong offers housing in UOW accommodation to study abroad students as long as the student applies by the accommodation deadline.
The apartments and residence halls are spread out throughout the campus and city. Each one is a little different, and you can compare the options online.
To be guaranteed housing, you must apply through UOW by the posted deadline.
Meals
Some housing options offer meal plans included, and some do not. Check out the website for details. There are many restaurants and grocery stores on and near campus for you to enjoy.

Note: There may be several tabs in the Estimate of Costs. Please be sure that you are reviewing the tab for your anticipated semester abroad.
Currently, the only option for UOW is Non-Exchange (also referred to as “Study Abroad”, as opposed to “exchange”). It is the same experience, but includes additional fees listed on the cost sheet.
It is possible that an exchange slot may become available if UOW sends more students to UAlbany.

Eligibility Requirements
Sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students from any SUNY institution is welcome to apply. Applications are welcome from students in all majors.
A minimum overall grade point average of 2.7 is required.
Participants enroll in regular university classes taught in English with Australian students.

Funding Opportunities
Most financial aid and academic awards will apply to semester programs.
External scholarships, listed on our website, are a good way to partially fund your study abroad experience. In addition, the Center for International Education and Global Strategy offers two scholarship programs for UAlbany students studying abroad on UAlbany or 4-year SUNY programs.

- UALBANY’S FALL SEMESTER WILL BE UOW’s SPRING SEMESTER – July through November
- UALBANY’s SPRING SEMESTER WILL BE UOW’s AUTUMN SEMESTER – February through June

Program Orientations
Upon acceptance to the program, you will be required to attend a mandatory pre-departure orientation. During this time, you will have the opportunity to meet other program participants, discuss in-depth the details of your program, and prepare for the overall education abroad experience. The fall semester pre-departure orientation will be conducted toward the end of April/early May and in late November/early December for the spring term abroad.
Upon arrival at UOW, you will attend a mandatory program orientation. This is an important and informative set of sessions organized by the International Office of your host university.
Support Services
UAlbany’s Office of Education Abroad staff assists you during the application process, in your preparation to travel abroad, and on-site if necessary. UOW’s International Office staff serve as an experienced resource for resolving issues that you may encounter while abroad.
