Housing

Fremantle Accommodations:

Fremantle provides three different options for on-campus housing. Students may also choose to find their own nearby accommodation.

Sydney Accommodations:

There is no pre-arranged housing available to students at Sydney Notre Dame. Students can find information on Notre Dame’s website that details recommended housing providers.

Meals

There are many restaurants on and near campus for you to enjoy. There is no meal plan for this program.

 *There are a limited number of low-cost exchange student spaces available. Additional non-exchange spaces are available for an additional cost. You will be selected for an exchange slot based on the overall quality of your application. UAlbany students are given preference and GPA and number of credits completed will be taken into consideration.

Academic Requirements

Juniors, seniors and exceptional sophomores in all majors with at a least 2.5 GPA are welcome to apply. If you have a lower GPA, you should consult with the study abroad program coordinator.

Experiential Learning

At Notre Dame in Fremantle some courses include field trips in their curriculum, some examples include:

• AL375 Australian History and Society: Australian Outback and Indigenous Culture
• BS307 Business in Asia: Asian Business Trip

At Notre Dame in Sydney, international students are often taken on the following excursions:

• South Pylon
• Aboriginal Culture cruise
• Quarantine Station
• Hunter Valley
• Blue Mountains

Funding Opportunities

Most financial aid and academic awards will apply to semester programs.

External scholarships, listed on our website, are a good way to partially fund your study abroad experience. In addition, the Center for International Education and Global Strategy offers two scholarship programs for UAlbany students studying abroad on UAlbany or 4-year SUNY programs.

About the City

Notre Dame gives students the opportunity to choose from two unique locations in Australia: Fremantle and Sydney.

Fremantle, located within the Perth metropolitan region, is a vibrant port city which draws people to its beaches, parks, eateries and markets. Perth is the sunniest capital city in Australia!

The Perth metropolitan area has a population of 2.14 million people with very diverse backgrounds. The Perth/Fremantle lifestyle is very relaxed and there is lots to see and do. Fremantle is always abuzz with beach-side sunset markets, popular local bars, live music and street cafes. With Perth city just 18 kilometres away and accessible by train in less than 30 mins, students have the freedom to explore far and wide for daytime adventures and nightlife. Numerous festivals and events are hosted throughout the year including the Fringe Festival, Fremantle Street Arts Festival and Perth International Arts Festival.

Fremantle was the only Australian city to feature in The Lonely Planet’s guide to the ‘Top Ten Tourism Cities in the World’ in 2016 and Perth recently featured in the top two friendliest cities in the world in the prestigious magazine Condé Nast Traveller.

Just a 40 minute drive from Perth International Airport, Fremantle is within easy reach of Western Australia’s main gateway to Asia, with most Asian cities no more than seven hours away by air.

With a population of 5.6 million people, Sydney is a dynamic and multicultural city with a sunny climate. There is so much to see and experience within the city including a vibrant cultural scene, fabulous coastline, nature reserves and fantastic food. Students commonly like to explore:

• The Sydney Harbour (a ferry will take you to Hunters Hill, the city, north to Manly or east to Watson’s Bay)
• Beaches, sea pools, coastal walks and nature trails
• National parks including Royal National Park to the south, Blue Mountains National Park to the west, and Ku-ring-gai Chase and Lane Cove National Parks to the north
• City and local parks including the Royal Botanic Gardens, Centennial Park, Hyde Park
• Markets for fresh fruit, vegetables and seafood or markets for art and craft including Sydney Fish Markets, Chinatown night markets, The Rocks Friday Food Markets, Paddington Markets, Glebe Markets, Bondi Markets and Marrickville Markets
• The Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Rocks, Bondi Beach, Taronga Park Zoo

A valid U.S. passport is required to participate in this program. You will need a visa for this program. More information regarding the visa application process is available upon acceptance to the program.

Application Availability

Applications become available online one semester before the program start date, based on the following timeline:

• Spring programs: July
• Fall/Year programs: December

Program Orientations

Upon acceptance to the program, you will be required to attend a mandatory pre-departure orientation. During this time, you will have the opportunity to meet other program participants, discuss in-depth the details of your program, and prepare of the overall education abroad experience. The fall semester pre-departure orientation will be conducted the Saturday before the end of Spring UAlbany classes and in late November/early December for the spring term abroad.

Upon arrival at the University of Notre Dame you will attend a mandatory program orientation. This is an important and informative set of sessions organized by International Office of your host university.

Support Services

UAlbany’s Office of Education Abroad staff assists you during the application process, in your preparation to travel abroad, and on-site if necessary. UNDA’s International Office staff serve as an experienced resource for resolving issues that you may encounter in while abroad.
